SharePoint Security Concepts.

Security is a hot subject these days and it is transparent that information needs to be fortified. At the similar instant, an amazing assets of accumulation ease remains mostly vulnerable. Why? If you construe this article you strength concord with me that it is (console) quite byzantine to apply department strategies. The good info is though, "Department and SharePoint" doesn't equal to "Ngo Unattainable". SharePoint 2007 comes with a lot of great new warranty concepts and features. A best of the assign actually goes to the ASP.NET group who delivered galore of the concepts which now strike in SharePoint 2007.

Fitting as with SharePoint body in indiscriminate, guard falsehood in SharePoint 2007 is handled by several groups of people at diverse levels. IT administrators cause which hallmark and security policies are in make, as effort of the overall computer farm configuration. They also requisite to configure dominance for the farm's distributed services. Separately then, situation aggregation administrators and parcel owners care the aggregation permission. Both are equally primary, as the unexceeded surety measures die if a accumulation audits and logs are great to observe usage, and to detect any loopholes and cover

At best spring it strength seem odd that SharePoint, by choice, installs a cooperation vein with warrant enabled, instead of an cyberspace computer with unidentified make. From a protection stand-point this of bed makes count import. Microsoft level went a locomote added: steady when activity unidentified hit, by nonremittal, operation is really untold specific. Authoring documents and brass is completely unrealizable with unnamed right.

Certificate is a lot virtually Validation and Encryption, and there is no shortage of choices for both with SharePoint 2007. So, provision authentication is a recipient low stair! "Out of the box", SharePoint 2007 supports cardinal authentication methods. NTLM (abbreviated for NT Lan Manager, which is simply the Windows substantiation that everyone is informed with) and Kerberos (also a Windows "acceptable" marker) are offered during instalment, but I praise to get started with NTLM, as Kerberos requires "unscheduled design by the orbit administrator", time NTLM totality without promote irritate.

For umpteen installations, unnamed cyberspace admittance testament also be required. In these cases, forms-based hallmark along with SSL coding is the "de-facto definitive" to be set up. In sufferer a multi-server/service set-up is required, both Kerberos and Individual Sign-on (SSO) might transmute indispensable.

SharePoint 2007 "inherits" a lot marker providers from Windows and IIS (Cyberspace Accumulation Computer): Staple, Permit, Certficates, NTLM and Kerberos. ASP.NET adds LDAP, SQL Server, Bustling Directory, as fountainhead as quite a bit of extensibility. A safe example of how easy it is (for a technologist!) to give the authentication businessperson prize is Willie Corrosion's journal instal on "Using a SharePoint Tilt as an Hallmark Bourgeois".

Why are so many organizations implementing SharePoint

The Microsoft Share Point has developed from a basic product to its Microsoft self product segment. Share Point is used for company intranets as well as customer-facing websites; internal document combination and external partner networks; a basic management interface and all-out project management system. Given its many and hard, we've seen a host of new products come out to add onto or simple Share Point, as well as a huge boon in industry coverage and training on Share Point.

Microsoft Share Point Critical Path Training represents a training company faithfully 100 percent to teaching IT pros, fresher to make expert, all about Share Point. According to the company trainer, they are the only Share Point-only training company in the market. Before delving into what Critical Path Training is doing to teach IT pros Share Point, I wanted to get the company's opinion on how Share Point has grown, what the needs of IT pros and related staff are, and where it's going in the future. I asked Andrew Conn ell, founding partner of Critical Path Training, to give me an overview of Share Point.

Microsoft Share Point is the fastest progress his product company . Microsoft like Share Point for many cause, main because it does so many things for them. It is hard to compare it to competing products in the market because there is no one real competitor. There may be other options for ECM solutions, content management solutions, collaboration, social networking, search and business intelligence, but there is no single competitor. Companies like the fact they don't have to be in a position to buy many different products and then integrate them together. While Share Point might not do everything that everyone wants, there is also a very robust and healthy ecosystem of partners that build off Share Point."

Microsoft Share Point a very big product does a lot of products. It is also is mostly the hub for a many of helps within the organization and contains a valuable amount of the company's data & IP. Because Share Point deployment needs to be properly architecture to perform adequately, as well as have a reliable disaster recovery strategy. we can say like other mission critical systems like Exchange and Active Directory, IT pros need to have a strong grasp of Share Point specific issues and aspects to maintain a successful deployment."

We can watch Microsoft Share Point experiencing continued progress. Will it continue at the rate we've watch the three years ago? Maybe, maybe not. But with all the work Microsoft has put into increase and improving the next release of Share Point making it more enterprise ready, we expect to see more people upgrade from previous versions and also migrate to the platform. It will be exciting to see the customer reaction to the new product as news about features and plans start to be disclosed later this fall (the Share Point Conference 2009 in October 2009 has been dubbed the '14' conference by Microsoft. '14' is the codename for the next version: Share Point Server 2010).

SharePoint Security Concepts

Share point Security is a hard topic these days it is show that data needs to be protected. At the same time, this is very great oportunity. amount of data still remains largely unprotected. If we see this paragraph we might agree with me that it is quite complex to implement security strategies. The good news is though, "Security and SharePoint" doesn't equalent to everything possible nothing is imposible.

The Microsoft SharePoint manage in general, security configuration in SharePoint 2007 is handle by different team of people at different levels. IT administrators diclayer which authentication and security policies are in effect, in sharepoint 2007. as part of the all server farm configuration.

They also need to configure authorization for the farm's shared services. Separately then, site collection administrators and site owners manage the content authorization. Both are equally important, as the best security measures fail if a content administrator accidentally gives access to the wrong person. Therefore even audits and logs are important to monitor usage, and to detect any loopholes and mistakes in the overall configuration.

The Microsoft SharePoint Security is a more about Authentication and Encryption, there are some services they always check authentication. and there is no shortage of choices for both with SharePoint 2007. So, planning authentication is a mandatory first step! "Out of the box", SharePoint 2007 supports nine authentication methods.

NTLM it is simply the Windows authentication and Kerberos it is also authentication service are offered during installation, but I recommend to get started with NTLM, as Kerberos requires "special configuration by the domain administrator", while NTLM works without further hassle.

Security Architecture for SharePoint Products and Technologies

Share Point site provides services across an extranet or is accessible from the Internet by the general public, it is essential that external access to the site occurs through a firewall. The firewall inspects all incoming and outgoing traffic, and then allows or disallows the traffic based on the preconfigured policies.

Firewalls perform packet filtering: when traffic comes to the firewall, it compares the data in the IP header with the preconfigured rules to determine whether to allow or deny access. However, to protect SharePoint Portal Server deployments from external attacks, it is also necessary to check and verify the payload inside the HTTP header.

Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 firewall is an application-layer firewall that, in addition to packet filtering, provides the ability to examine the content contained in the application-level protocols such as HTTP. Refer to Chapter 25, “Firewall Considerations for SharePoint Portal Server Deployments,” for detailed information on the ISA server configuration for making your SharePoint sites available to external users without compromising the security of your internal network.

In the Web environment, SSL is commonly used between Web browsers and front-end Web servers to create a secure communication channel. In SharePoint Products and Technologies deployments, SSL provides a secure way of establishing an encrypted communication link with users who connect to the SharePoint sites from outside the firewall.

In this chapter, we looked at the security mechanisms SharePoint Products and Technologies uses to provide secure access for users and reduce the threat of security compromise. User authentication is built on underlying technologies such as IIS and ASP.NET and uses Windows security principals, while access authorization is based on a site group membership that associates each user directly or indirectly with a permission that controls the specific actions that the user can perform. Code access security allows you to configure granular access for the SharePoint Products and Technologies application code.

Microsoft Share Point Communication security is important for making sure that the data is transmitted securely both inside and outside the firewall. because microsoft always want his client secure. Because Microsoft Share Point Products and Technologies security is layered on top of the security of many underlying technologies, it is important to implement a defense-in-depth approach that addresses security across all components of your SharePoint Products and Technologies deployment.

vpnc Connects Linux and Cisco VPNs

The Cisco VPN client, vpnc, enables our Linux workstation to connect to a Cisco router VPN concentrator PIX firewall. Until vpnc existed, corporate employees were often relegated to connecting to their company's network via a Windows machine or with Cisco's problematic VPN client for Linux. but not without slight configuration effort. In this article we show you how to get it up and running.

Some important information we will need:

IPSEC gateway: the hostname or IP of the VPN server
IPSEC ID: the group name
IPSEC secret: the shared password for the group
your username
your password

The group name and shared password is the most important mostly use method for connecting to the Cisco IPSEC VPN. In lieu of certificates, this pre-shared key enables the forming of an IPSEC tunnel based on the shared secret.

Instalation option:
This is Depend upon our Linux distribution, we will need to install the vpnc program before we can begin. Fedora, by default, now installs vpnc, so Fedora users can skip to the next section. Ubuntu users can run apt-get install vpnc as root.
we will likely want to use Network Manager to enable quick VPN connections. Fedora's Network Manager is already installed, but in Ubuntu we will need to install the network-manager-vpnc package and configure it.

Configuring vpnc Manually:
This steps is optional depend upon we configer it or skip this option. NetworkManager section below.

Now that vpnc is installed, we will notice an /etc/vpnc/ directory. This is where we will be working for a bit. Creating a configuration file is optional, but without it, we will enter all the necessary information manually every time we connect to the VPN. If we wish to test our IP, group information, and user credentials. The configuration file for vpnc is quite simple. Create a file named after the network we wish to connect to, for example: /etc/vpnc/enp.conf

Connecting and Disconnecting:
Now that the configuration file exists, we can simply run sudo vpnc enp.conf . we will now be connected to the VPN. If everything working fine and then we will notice a new 'tun' interface in the 'ifconfig' output. now we disconnect the vpn.Do not that the default route gets replaced with the VPN router when we are connected. now we remember to disconnect from the VPN when we are done.

SharePoint Portal Server Architecture

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 share the same underlying technologies. This is a change from the first version of SharePoint Portal Server. Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 did not share underlying technology with SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft. In this version of Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, SharePoint Portal Server, as the server product, works with and builds upon the architecture of Windows SharePoint Services. This chapter does not cover the feature differences between SharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services. Instead, it focuses on the architectural differences that are found in SharePoint Portal Server and explains the architecture of services that are particular to SharePoint Portal Server.

SharePoint Portal Server includes services that are not offered in Windows SharePoint Services. These services can be viewed in the Services application in Control Panel and include the Administration service, the SharePoint Portal Alert service, the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Search service, and the Microsoft Single Sign-On service.
During installation, all services that SharePoint Portal Server can provide are installed regardless of which services you choose to install. The services are then enabled or disabled based on which services the administrator chooses to provide to users.

SharePoint Portal Server installs an administration service, called SharePoint Portal Administration, that appears as SPSAdmin in the Services application in Control Panel. SPS Admin can stop and start services that SharePoint Portal Server needs, including SPSSearch. It can also add or delete catalogs and can add or delete search applications as needed.

The purpose of the SharePoint Portal Alert service is to notify a user, when the user requests it, that there is a change to a designated item, document, list, or document library on the website. Alerts are managed by the job server.

When shared services is implemented, child portal sites look to the parent’s configuration database for shared services data. Although some data is still needed from the original databases used by the child sites after shared services is configured, most information is retrieved from the parent site’s databases. By default, each portal site has two user accounts that are used to access databases. These accounts are called the configuration database administration account and the application pool account for the portal site.

Microsoft SharePoint Important Information

Microsoft has discovered a major bug in Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 2 that renders SharePoint inaccessible after 180 days, and the company says it's working on a hotfix. In a quickly blog post, corporate vice president of the Office SharePoint Server Group at Microsoft, said the problem stems from the product expiration date being improperly activated during the installation of SharePoint 2007 SP2. This causes SharePoint to function as a trial version and shut down after six months.

The glitch may seem minor, but given the booming popularity of SharePoint, which last year became a billion-dollar business for Microsoft, it's one that could irritate partners who've been seeing a steady stream of SharePoint services business. Microsoft is working on a hotfix to correct the problem and is directing customers to a manual workaround that involves re-entering the Product ID number (PID) on the Convert License Type page in Central Administration, Teper said, adding that the SharePoint shutdown doesn't impact customers' data, configuration or application code.

We want to assure our customers that this issue does not impact data integrity or their SharePoint deployment in any other way," Teper wrote. The SP2 glitch affects Office SharePoint Server 2007, Project Server 2007, Form Server 2007, Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express, but not Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Testing a SharePoint project is quite a tedious job – there are a lot of floating parts out there which make it complicated and time consuming. So every thing which makes it a little easier is interesting. (Another reason for using it was to generate usage logs so that I could start working on my SharePoint extensions – Usage Statistics again) The last couple of days I have been looking at how I can use Visual Studio 2008 Test Edition to test SharePoint Server 2007 (this would also work with WSS 3.0).

SharePoint performance and scalability can benefit significantly from 64-bit SQL Server and the throughput increases are significant enough for us to make the difficult decision to only support SharePoint Server 2010 on 64-bit SQL Server 2005 or 2008.
